As a dog owner, you love your pup. Sometimes, those cute eyes are hard to resist, and you just have to toss them a piece of what you're eating, too. However, not everything that people can eat is also safe for dogs. The next time you give into your pup's begging, make sure that you're not giving them a treat that causes them harm.

1. Anything chocolate: While most dog owners are aware that they cannot digest chocolate, it is worth paying extra attention to keep them from getting any. If you have any doubt whether or not dessert items may have any chocolate, refrain from sharing any with your dog. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is to your pup.

2. Grapes and raisins: These can cause severe and acute kidney damage, which can ultimately be fateful for your dog. Both grapes and raisins and any other grape-derivatives are detrimental to your dog's health. Yes, this includes wine and other alcoholic drinks, as well. Note, not all artificial grape flavoring is hazardous to dogs, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

3. Onions and garlic: Large amounts of these and other related vegetables--such as leeks--can drastically harm your pup's red blood cells. Before sharing any of your Italian dinner with your dog, be mindful of what is in the recipe.

4. Avocado: While some canines can handle very small amounts of avocado, it contains a toxin that causes gastrointestinal distress. With prolonged diarrhea and vomiting, this puts your dog's health in grave danger. Make sure to keep the avocado toast out of reach around your dogs!

5. Coffee & other caffeine products: Caffeinated products can cause a variety of heart and lung problems in dogs, some that prove to be quickly fatal. This includes coffee grounds, coffee beans, caffeinated soda, and more. Make sure to keep all energizing products out of reach from your pooch.

Always watch out for any odd symptoms that indicate your dog may have been a victim of accidental poisoning. Be especially mindful if your household contains any of the above foods.

Be mindful and don't give in

No matter how your dog begs, make sure that you are mindful over what you are sharing with them. One mistake could be costly, or worse, dangerous to your dog's life. In addition to not intentionally sharing anything dangerous, make sure you don't leave any of these foods laying out on the counter, or as remnants in the trash where your dog can get to it.
